A stream of consciousness of my own experiences, sharing it with others to show they are not alone, or that we can have those moments, we can aim higher, we can put as\u00a0much effort into love as we do our careers. Being able to share that same open book approach to romance with my writing\u00a0via a short film has always been a dream of mine.<\/p>\n<p>For years I had been sitting on an idea for a film that could capture that \u201ceveryday\u201d between a boyfriend and his girlfriend.\u00a0I have notes all over my journals and in documents on my computer dating back to 2007, each with a different moment\u00a0from a day that I loved and wanted to re-create. I have loved to shoot home videos ever since I was a young boy. I was\u00a0always the person who captured the family movies and was able to do so in an inconspicuous way that really captured, in\u00a0my eyes, the essence of my family. This bled over into my relationships; I would capture small moments during a relationship<br \/>\nand after awhile I had enough to cut together a cute romantic piece that could depict our love for one another over\u00a0the months or years we had been together. It was these small moments of each day that made a pretty montage. Being\u00a0inspired by that relationship and randomly filming clips on my phone of our days and ending up just throwing together a\u00a0cute video for her when she went away for the holidays kept me going, knowing it could be done, and ultimately sparking\u00a0that light in my brain that the iPhone may be the best weapon of choice. But these were snippets, tiny moments, not\u00a0telling a complete story, but a feeling. It was intimate, cute, and very personal. I wanted this to feel the same way, but\u00a0dressed differently, as a complete story from beginning to end.) What I wanted was an entire day!<\/p>\n<p>The goal was to give the feeling of \u2018I remember that\u2019, from one relationship or another, to \u2018I want that day\u2019 without going\u00a0over the top cheesy&#8230; balancing romance and realistic situations. Thus Romance in NYC was born and we began our\u00a0extremely successful Kickstarter campaign to share with the world just that, a full day, no hooks or catches(such as a\u00a0proposal video might do), starting from waking up in the morning to going to bed at night. The film is a PoV perspective of\u00a0the Boyfriend and his Girlfriend taking you on a journey through their life enjoying an everyday in NYC, but capturing the\u00a0tiny nuances that are romance, even in the most mundane situations, with NYC as a beautiful backdrop.<br \/>\nUltimately I knew shooting this film on an iPhone would require a very strong story, but the very nature of the film required\u00a0there to be less script and more situations that would inspire improvisation. Even more importantly was casting someone\u00a0who would be comfortable with such an up close, intimate way of shooting, on a subject matter that required trust and\u00a0a special connection with the camera itself. Rachael McOwen was absolutely brilliant with her ability to be saying, \u201cOh\u00a0I forgot, I am supposed to pretend that I like you\u201d, while crawling into \u201cthe boyfriends\u201d arms and looking into the camera\u00a0lens for a perfect shot. She had this uncanny ability to talk to me as the director but keep eye contact with the camera as if\u00a0it weren\u2019t even there.<\/p>\n<p>This was a challenge for me, because I like to layout the work ahead of me, but without a script in hand, and only a\u00a0breakdown\/general outline I had to go into each scenario with a deep sense of trust in my cast and crew. Many times\u00a0I did not know how each shot may turn out, but trusting that I and my cast had experienced or heard of someone\u00a0experiencing those \u201cmoments\u201d in all the places we filmed, and were able to breath life into it was what got me through\u00a0each day. We had a general outline, getting us from point A to B, but the true magic happened when we were tired, spent\u00a0from the days of shooting, and just interacted naturally. Keeping the camera rolling for those moments was key, capturing\u00a0true interactions and true friendships that we had formed, which I would say is what a real relationship is in the long run, a\u00a0strong bond and friendship.<\/p>\n<p>With an extremely small budget and a modest Kickstarter to fund us, we pushed forward pushing the film dates until we\u00a0finally couldn\u2019t wait any longer without losing the fall weather and being unable to shoot due to the cold, not to mention\u00a0changing the films entire feel. We ended up shooting majority of the film prior to our Kickstarter being fully funded just so\u00a0we could get those perfect environmental moments and beautiful NYC foliage.<br \/>\nThe iPhone\u2019s limitations such as low light and certain situations made looking at dailies a scary exercise in not being\u00a0OCD. But as we continued to shoot I realized it wasn\u2019t about the grain in a shot but about the way Rachael would look into\u00a0\u201cthe boyfriends\u201d eyes and how we could use the iPhone\u2019s limitations to our advantage, maintaining the\u00a0suspension of disbelief during post, with some truly interesting and unique cutting sequences. It allowed us to be a bit\u00a0more experimental with our story but still bringing the viewer on a beautiful journey through this day that we now call:\u00a0\u201cRomance in NYC\u201d. We wanted it to\u00a0almost be subconsciously established quickly that this is \u201cthe boyfriends\u201d\u00a0PoV. The issue we ran into though was that, as the director of\u00a0photography holding the camera and being \u201cthe boyfriend\u201d I was limited\u00a0to only having one hand in the shot at a time, however we were able to\u00a0find creative ways to hold the camera over my body, with my amazing\u00a0production assistant Natalie Johnson holding the camera and clinging\u00a0to me as if our bodies moved in tandem to keep the motion clear and\u00a0smooth, but allowing me to use two hands to do such actions as helping\u00a0\u201cthe girlfriend\u201d put her jacket on, or laying on the couch and\u00a0being able to cuddle together with two hands holding each other. While\u00a0we could have had only one hand showing in most shots, we wanted the\u00a0viewer to be able to connect with the idea that this truly was the\u00a0perspective of \u201cthe boyfriend\u201d seamlessly and unobtrusively. Sure\u00a0I own many prosumer\u00a0cameras, but I always felt\u00a0they were just too big and\u00a0invasive for this<br \/>\nparticular film idea. To\u00a0achieve the right intimate,\u00a0candid feel, I felt I had\u00a0finally found my medium,\u00a0the iPhone 6.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Benefits and\u00a0Challenges of\u00a0Shooting on the iPhone<\/strong><br \/>\nIt was a freeing\u00a0experience to shoot on\u00a0such a small piece of\u00a0equipment. I have shot\u00a0on DSLR\u2019s and larger\u00a0prosumer cameras such\u00a0as the RED. They all\u00a0have their benefit but\u00a0the iPhone truly allowed\u00a0for us to get so personal\u00a0and creative with angles,\u00a0locations, and intimacy.\u00a0One of the biggest\u00a0benefits of shooting on\u00a0an iPhone is not\u00a0drawing crowds or make\u00a0a big fuss. We were\u00a0filming a short film in\u00a0multiple locations,\u00a0restaurants, clothing\u00a0stores, and people were\u00a0walking by like we were\u00a0just some crazy couple\u00a0in love making a home\u00a0movie. Mind you this also\u00a0made it hard to explain to\u00a0them if they were going\u00a0to continue walking into\u00a0the shot they would have\u00a0to sign a release form.\u00a0But ultimately it allowed\u00a0myself and the actress to\u00a0film as if we were in our\u00a0own bubble,\u00a0exponentially developing\u00a0the relationship between\u00a0\u201cthe boyfriend\u201d and\u00a0\u201cthe girlfriend\u201d on film.\u00a0While also allowing the\u00a0creativity the room to\u00a0breath with such a\u00a0improvisational script.<\/p>\n<p><strong>My Mom Called<\/strong><br \/>\nSo shooting on an\u00a0iPhone can have many\u00a0challenges, however,\u00a0there are some things\u00a0you just can\u2019t predict\u00a0when your main\u00a0camera is also your\u00a0phone. During one of the\u00a0shots, luckily not one of\u00a0the better takes, all of a\u00a0sudden MOM pops up on\u00a0my screen and my\u00a0somewhat invasive\u00a0ringtone begins playing.\u00a0Now normally I run it in\u00a0airplane mode to save\u00a0battery and reduce\u00a0interruptions during\u00a0shooting. But I needed\u00a0it on as I was waiting\u00a0for my assistant to get\u00a0back to me with a prop\u00a0we needed. So the, \u201cYes\u00a0Mom, I am filming.. yes\u00a0on my phone\u2026 yes the\u00a0phone has a camera\u2026\u00a0no I am not in the\u00a0basement.\u201d was rather\u00a0embarrassing on set.<\/p>\n<h2
